The Kingdom of Wessex The breadbasket of Albion. Rolling green hills, fertile farmland, and ancient forests define this southern kingdom. Ruled by King Athelred the Wise, Wessex is prosperous and stable, with a strong central government and deep Christian traditions. The capital, Winchester, boasts a magnificent cathedral and royal palace. Society is orderly and hierarchical, peasants know their place, lords enforce the king's peace, and the Church provides spiritual guidance. The economy thrives on agriculture, wool trade, and Winchester's markets. Wessex maintains defensive alliances with minor lords along the Mercian border but avoids continental entanglements whenever possible. The Kingdom of Mercia The contested heartland. Ancient Roman roads cross dense forests and earthworks like Woden's Dyke, remnants of centuries of invasion and defense. Ruled by the young and weak King Offa, Mercia's real power lies with its fractious nobles, who build fortified manors and maintain private armies. The capital, Tamworth, feels more like a military camp than a city. Mercia sits directly between Wessex's stability and the continental war zone, making it a battleground for proxy conflicts and a haven for mercenaries, outlaws, and desperate men. The people are suspicious, hardened, and practical. Forest law is harsh, wolves are real threats, and strangers are viewed with caution. Opportunity exists for those willing to risk everything — land can be claimed if you can hold it, fortunes made if you can fight. Mercia is the shield wall of Albion, forever waiting for the next blow. The Kingdom of Northumbria The wild north. Rugged mountains, deep fjords, and cold, unforgiving seas shape this kingdom's character. Heavily influenced by Norse settlers, Northumbria has no single king — instead, the Great Council of Jarls rules through uneasy consensus. The capital, Jorvik, is a bustling port where Saxon monks and Norse warriors trade, argue, and occasionally kill each other. Society is looser, more independent. A man is judged by his reputation and his sword arm, not his birth. The old gods still whisper in the northern valleys alongside the new faith. Fishing, timber, and raiding drive the economy. Northumbrians are hard, practical, and fiercely proud. They owe allegiance to no southerner and care little for the wars of Franca. For an outsider, Northumbria offers freedom — but freedom in a land where winter can kill you and your neighbor might be a reaver. The Kingdom of Franca The gilded tyrant of the continent. Wealthy, cultured, and aggressively expansionist, Franca claims ancient dominion over all of Avalonia. Its monarchy is powerful and centralized, ruling from the glittering capital of Lutetia with an iron hand wrapped in velvet. Franca's knights are the finest in the world — arrogant, heavily armored, and devout. The kingdom funds cathedrals, universities, and endless wars with the profits of rich farmland and continental trade. Its claim on Aquitania is the obsession of generations, a holy cause wrapped in dynastic ambition. To Albion, Franca is a source of fine wine, expensive cloth, and constant anxiety. Franca's armies have crossed the Narrow Sea before. They will again. The Duchy of Aquitania The rebellious jewel of the south. Rich in vineyards, salt, and Mediterranean trade, Aquitania refuses to bow to Franca's rule. Its dukes are cultured, cunning, and fiercely independent, ruling from the sun-drenched city of Bordeaux. Aquitanian ships dominate southern trade routes, bringing spices, silks, and gold from beyond the known world. The duchy maintains alliances with anyone who hates Franca — which includes half of Albion and assorted border lords. The people speak their own tongue, sing their own songs, and view Franca's inhabitants as pompous tyrants. The war between Aquitania and Franca has lasted so long that no one remembers how it started. It simply is — a fact of life like winter or taxes. For a mercenary, Aquitania offers steady work. For a trader, it offers wealth. For a peasant in Albion, it offers nothing but higher taxes to fund someone else's distant war.
